Is Golf good for cycling & vis versa

After Mathieu van der Poel won the toughest & most sort after Classic the Paris Roubaix it was reported he went golfing 2 days later. He received some criticism from misinformed supporters who thought it was not a sport for a grand champion

Little did they consider it was the best relaxation he could do to take his mind off all the pressure he was under. Now look at the other end of the scale in terms of  racing success  & age I am 86 and Sunday the 19th January I competed in an Art & Charity Pro-am International Golf event at Monte Rei golf & country club, undoubtedly one of the top  courses  in Portugal, The day before Saturday the 18th at my Portuguese course Tavira Golf Club, I was the competition winner. It is fair to say that with the handicap system in golf, all players have an equal chance of  winning.

So one other thing I am trying to convey in this blog is that even if you don't progress in your cycling career as you would have wished there are substantial advantages in having made the effort, not least the confidence you will have gained which will greatly benefit you in your future endeavours.

I am the oldest  player in the club playing in  competitions, could this possibly be attributed to having a healthy sporting career as a cyclist .  I retired as a professional just before the age of 30, choosing to play golf as it was impossible to carry on as a professional  after trying for 3 years,  as there was no future in the Pro class in the UK, I had spent 3 years in France making a living in the criteriums; well I paid my way. When the Professional class was inaugurated in the UK I was refused an amateur licence, they said they needed riders like me, I tried for 3 years trying to build a separate career at the same time, but as there was no money and no future I had no choice other than retiring to concentrate on my career.

After a 10 year interlude I returned to  cycling like many I had put on too much weight  and lingered too long at the 19th.hole,(The bar). However my interlude into golf helped my business path , as did the confidence I gained making a living for 3 years on my bike in France , not everybody can reach the top but they should profit greatly from their experiences in future life especially if they  go into business , as I did. Stay healthy,  nothing is to be gained by taking what you think is an easy path, you will pay the consequences in latter life. As far as I can work out all the riders that beat me in France have long since passed away, we know why in some cases.

On the on the other hand golfers can extend their life and their golfing span by remaining healthy and what better way is there than riding a bike and bikers can relax more mentally by playing golf

Can you name any top riders especially the retired ones who play golf?.

There is much more on the site cycling70yearsonceworldchampion.com but even better read the book.
